Product Review – Ink Blending Tools

paper crafting with RA means i create more slowly and, because of loss of function, some techniques are avoided because products are not useable by people with disabilities and they exacerbate pain.

sponging is one of those techniques that i stopped doing but i’ve discovered a helpful tool – the creative expressions mini smoothies:

i love these sponges! they are easy to grasp, dense, and hold more ink so less effort is required and the task is completed more quickly which means less pain. the smaller tip can be used for small areas like sponging paper while it is still in a die.

note: price above is canadian dollars and allergy alert: they are latex.

while not being completely scientific, i did use the same supplies for each test:

  • 140 lb. cold press watercolour paper
  • only one of each tool for two distress ink colours: picked raspberry and mustard seed and
  • penny black patina stencil.

as you can see from the examples above, they’re very similar; the difference was that the blending foam with handles took longer and required more pressure.

these are the picked raspberry and mustard seed distress inks blended together. i used the same sponge for both colours on each sample, deliberately not swiping the sponge on paper towels in between since i wanted a blend of the two. the colour in the bottom sample is slightly more intense because the sponge is easier to use so i spent more time blending. also, because i could hold the sponge close to the bottom i had more control and more success.

the daisy on the pink box, posted earlier today, was coloured in picked raspberry ink with a mini smoothie sponge:

why not other tools?

the wooden handle is difficult to hold, the velcro requires a pinching and grasping motion to remove and since the foam holds less ink, it requires more time holding it in an awkward and painful position.

thanks for popping by and if you try these, let me know what you think.

Pink Daisy Treat Box

this cardstock is very bright pink, which i love, but i think it looks more intense in the photo.

i used my scor pal and followed the tutorial at pootles’ blog to create this little 2 inch box; the challenge is to find tiny treats to fit inside – maybe a couple of chocolate kisses. i sponged the my favorite things daisy with picked raspberry distress ink, using a creative expressions ‘mini smoothies’ blending sponge, and added flower soft to the centre; the box closes with a magnet.

Make Mine Chocolate Too!

i’ve been seeing so many adorable bunny images but i’d like to raise awareness that chocolate bunnies are more appropriate to give for easter than real bunnies; i support the make mine chocolate campaign.

bunnies are precious and until my daughter adopted two of my furry grand bunnies, i never knew how sweet and smart they were. unfortunately, real bunnies are given as easter presents only to be returned to shelters or worse because it was an impulse buy without any thought about their care and long term commitment.

i painted this cute inky antics image with twinkling H2Os and popped on foam tape to an embossed brick background using a taylored expressions embossing folder.

i started this card by painting the sky with twinkling H2Os, then painted the cute stampendous snowman and added a sentiment with a die i first noticed on a card by my penny black and more teamie, lynn.

all you need to do is create one card every month on the 25th and you have until the last day of each month to play along. pop over to the blog to be inspired by the rest of the design team, to read the rules and see the fabulous prize on offer.

Spring Chicks At Penny Black And More

just a little reminder that there’s still plenty of time to play along with the ‘feature a creature’ theme this month at the penny black and more challenge.

i made a small card featuring the cute chicks from the penny black ‘chick to chick’ clear set, painted with twinkling H2Os, added stickles in yellow, clear and black and popped the image panel on foam tape.

remember your focal point must be hand stamped to be eligible for one of the fabulous prizes from this month’s sponsors: Penny Black, Marianne Designs, Bee Crafty. a future guest designer will be selected from those who use a PB image.

You Come To Mind

if you follow me, you know my shoulder has been sore; it needs to be replaced but i’m putting that off for as long as i can because of the rehab time. creating and computer use are limited but when i saw the impression obsession challenge theme was clean and simple, i thought i could manage it and i did.

i sponged distress inks onto cold press watercolour paper, spritzed, stamped the IO sentiment, you come to mind (D9772) and attached it to a white card base measuring 3.5 by 5 inches.

i’m also playing along with the just add ink challenge #399 theme of just add water.

Easter Treats

i created two easter treat boxes using the taylored expressions matchbox die; a miniature kitkat bar fits perfectly inside.

Buzzing By At Penny Black And More

oh my goodness, i have missed creating but my shoulder is still pretty sore so my creating and computer time is somewhat limited. but i do have a DT card for our new monthly theme at the penny black and more challenge and for march, we’d like to see you ‘feature a creature.’

i’ve used this cute penny black image, a wooden stamp called ‘good news!’ and painted with twinkling H2Os. i’ve used brighter colours because i’m so tired of dreary overcast days and can’t wait for more sunshine. and we just got hit with more snow!

remember your focal point must be hand stamped with any company’s image or large sentiment/quote and a future guest designer will be selected from those who use a PB image. as always, you’ll love the prizes to be won from: Penny Black, Marianne Designs, Bee Crafty.
